GPS Setups

Global Positioning System's can be used for a wide range of applications in agriculture.  You can accurately measure distances, paddock sizes, and produce yield maps with them.

Rawlinson & Brown chooses to supply Garmin GPS products.  Garmin are known for their reliability and product range.  Talk to your agronomist about the benefits that a GPS system can provide for you.

NDVI Pictures

Near Difference Vigour Index (NDVI) pictures are used to assess crop biomass and vigour. These pictures are captured from specialised aerial or satellite imagery.  The images can then be used to evaluate various crop health issues, and influence management decisions.

NDVI pictures have been used successfully in Rice to aid in nitrogen topdressing decisions.  Variable rate prescriptions are developed from management zones drawn in around differing crop vigour areas.  The prescription allows the door on the plane to be controlled automatically, allowing for specific fertiliser rates in specific areas.

Wheat Tiller Numbers and Nitrogen Uptake

Cereal crops can have their tiller numbers per square metre accurately assessed and displayed in map form using new satellite technology from EADS Astrium.  Images are then produced reflecting nitrogen uptake for differing parts of the crop.  This information allows growers to effectively target high crop yields, reducing nitrogen topdressing at areas of high tiller numbers and high N uptake.  Talk to one of our agronomists on how to get this new technology to work for you.

Yield Mapping

Yield maps are the building blocks of precision agriculture.  Whilst you are harvesting your crop, why not collect the information it is providing.  Rawlinson & Brown can setup GPS systems for various types of combine harvesters and collect information for you.  Alternatively you can bring in your data card post harvest and have us produce yield maps for you.  From this we can assess how management decisions throughout the season impacted on your yield.

Fertiliser / Soil Prescriptions

Using specialised GIS software, Rawlinson & Brown can produce variable rate prescriptions for all your needs.  The prescriptions are created in-house by our agronomists, which means that your paddock is done correctly and on time.  Fertiliser prescriptions are individually tailored to the applicator, whether it is aerial, spread contractor, or the farmer's own equipment.

Variable rate prescriptions can allow for input cost savings (by not placing fertiliser where it is not needed), but more often inputs are just shifted (i.e. extra fertiliser placed where it is needed).

EM-31/38 Surveys

Electromagnetic Surveys measure the conductivity of the soil below.  These conductivity readings can determine between heavy (clays) and lighter soils.  EM surveys can be produced for soils to varying depths (from 1 – 6 metres ).  The end result is a soil map of your paddock that allows for further investigation.

GPS soil testing can be carried out within soil types (zones), and variable rate fertiliser, lime or gypsum prescriptions can be produced.

Rice and irrigation suitability can be evaluated from an EM survey.  Lighter soil types tend to allow deep drainage of water, making certain irrigation unfavourable.  Water storages and channels can also be EM surveyed using specialised floating equipment.
